How Often Should You Change Your Brake Pads?

It's one of the most common questions we hear at our Salem shop — and the honest answer is: it depends. Most brake pads last between 25,000 and 70,000 miles, but your real number depends on how and where you drive.

What affects brake pad life

Stop-and-go city driving around Salem wears pads faster than steady highway miles. Towing, hilly routes, aggressive braking, and the type of pad all play a role. Two identical cars can need brakes at very different mileages.

Warning signs it's time

  • Squealing or squeaking — many pads have a built-in wear indicator that chirps when they're low.
  • Grinding — metal-on-metal means the pads are gone and rotors are at risk. Come in right away.
  • Longer stopping distances or a soft pedal.
  • Vibration when braking, which can point to warped rotors.

Why timing matters

Replacing pads on time is cheap insurance. Wait too long and you'll likely need rotors too — turning a routine job into a bigger bill. A free brake inspection tells you exactly where you stand.
